Sometimes all you need to reawaken your love of life is a view. A panorama that speaks of the world’s rugged beauty – a vista that is simple and humble, yet also spectacular. A view, in fact, much like the one that awaits guests at the Greek island of Santorini’s incredible boutique hotel, Athina Luxury Suites.
The Athina is perched dramatically on the caldera cliffs of Santorini’s capital Fira, opposite the island’s famous active volcano and breathtaking views of the glistening Aegean Sea. Little wonder that it has become the number-one port of call for cosmopolitan adventurers traversing the Greek islands.
“The scenery is a little bit amazing,” says the hotel’s General Manager, Panagiotis Iglesis, who owns the hotel along with his wife Artemis Argyrou. “The landscape is unique. Many people will have heard of Santorini, but they don’t know much about the island. We can offer everything here – sun, sand, sea, romantic dinners, privacy and a relaxing atmosphere.”
Combining the island’s traditional whitewashed architecture with the opulence of any decadent five-star hotel, this marriage of styles suits Athina and its rooms, which are carved out of the walls of the mountains.
“It’s luxury,” says Artemis, “but minimal luxury. The buildings are not what you’d usually associate with luxury hotels, but the amenities – the restaurants, the Jacuzzis, the pools – most certainly are.”
Having undergone extensive renovation work last winter, including adding an extra five suites (to take the total to a still modest 19), extending the restaurant and building a new infinity pool on top of the cliffs, Artemis is confident that Athina’s intimate atmosphere will be retained. “People come here to enjoy the views in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere,” she says. “Understanding what our guests want ensures their stay is comfortable and luxurious.”
This attention to detail has been reflected in two major awards recently. Last year, it was named Best View Hotel in Europe from the high-end hotel award Haute Grandeur and also scooped top billing in the Best Romantic Hotel in Greece category at the prestigious World Luxury Hotel Awards.
“This is very important for us,” says Panagiotis, “ as our hotel is officially recognized and truly verified as one of the most important luxury destination points on Santorini island.” You see, it really is about that view.
