THE GOLD STANDARD
With more than 30 years of experience, jeweller Dominick Gabriel understands, better than most, that the true value of his creations can’t be counted in carats. “People automatically think of jewellery as something very materialistic,” he says. “I don’t see it that way at all. There is nothing you can buy that will be given with as much heart, will generate as much memory, and is as likely to become a part of you, as fine jewellery.”
Dominick designs the kind of cherished, wear-forever pieces that every woman dreams of having in her jewellery wardrobe – from engagement and eternity rings to diamond chokers and delicate gold chains – and wants to pass on to the next generation. “It’s why I always wear my father’s cufflinks,” says Dominick. “They’re a part of me. I want to make jewellery that generates that same kind of warm glow, jewellery that’s part of your life. Your jewellery collection should be unique. It’s why our range is so diverse. When you find a piece you love, you connect with it. I want everyone who comes into the shop to find something that’s right, so they can say, ‘This is exactly me’.”
Necklaces and bracelets are presented in a dazzling array of precious metals, designs and finishes. Rings are bold statement pieces, or slender, stackable and studded. “I don’t want my jewellery to be put in a safe,” says Dominick. “I want it to be comfortable, so it can be worn from day to night.” His engagement rings, in particular, have earned Gabriel & Co. a reputation as the 21st-century Tiffany & Co. “Getting engaged is your announcement to the world that you have chosen to belong together for life,” he says. “Your ring is the ultimate symbol of this.”
With more than 20,000 designs to choose from, there is something for every taste, from classic solitaires to modern free-form shapes and vintage-inspired rose-gold rings. Everything is handcrafted and infinitely customizable, and stones are certified conflict-free. Dominick’s father was Lebanese master jeweller Elias Gabriel. “I remember my dad taking me to work with him when I was seven years old,” he says. “That’s when my love of jewellery began.” Gabriel & Co. was founded in 1989 and, together with his older brother Jack, Dominick has built the company into what it is today. “Our goal was simple: to make beautiful jewellery. We didn’t have plans to conquer the world. When we saw people wearing our creations, we just felt honoured to be part of their celebrations.”
Today, Dominick and Jack run a family business that spans the US and counts global celebrities such as Nicki Minaj, Vanessa Hudgens and Demi Lovato as fans. They also manage Gabriel Love, the company’s philanthropic arm, which donates a portion of profits to organizations including the blood cancer charity DKMS and Afghan Hands, a non-profit that teaches skills to Afghan widows.
For Dominick, giving back is the secret of happiness. “Everyone wants to be successful, but we are driven more by emotion than profit,” he says. “We believe that if we create with our hearts, and make jewellery that celebrates life, love and happiness, then we will succeed in a way that makes us happy, too. You can’t ask for more.”
