From the beauty of the Portuguese landscape to the wildness of the ocean, designer Teresa Martins finds inspiration everywhere for her work. Best known for her stunning fashion designs and home accessories, Teresa prides herself on creating beautiful products that will stand the test of time. She uses natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk and wool, embellished with exclusive prints, textures and embroideries designed by the TM team.
“Garments created with passion become highly desirable as they are imbued with emotion,” she says. Teresa launched her company, TM teresamartins, more than 10 years ago. Unusually for a designer, she was a science academic – studying and then lecturing in biology and biochemistry at the University of Lisbon. In between, and due to her deep interest in art and design, she learned ceramics, drawing and painting. In her twenties she set up her first interior decoration shop.
Even before setting up Traces of me, Teresa had always designed her ideal clothes – a fairy tale of flowing silhouettes, intricate patterns and exquisite colours. “When I started working with textiles I decided to go to India to spend some time at a textile factory to observe, learn and understand what could be done,” she says. “I went for a week, stayed three weeks and created a capsule collection that was launched at the Maison & Objet fair in Paris in January 2004.” The collection was a success and Traces of me was born.
Formerly known as TM Collection, Traces of me designs are sold in several countries, online and at TM teresamartins stores in Portugal, and the firm is supported by the Portugal2020 programme. Teresa is particularly proud of Pure – a new collection of white cotton shirts designed and produced in Portugal – and the highly adaptable Poppy dress, with its uncluttered design and elegant silhouette.
“The way we dress ourselves and our homes expresses who we are and the way we see the world,” says Teresa. “TM is all about creating beauty. Our emphasis on excellence and attention to detail give the brand a unique originality, exclusivity and quality – values for which it has long been recognized.”
