Bristol-born entrepreneur James Kingston didn’t always know exactly what career path he should take. But from a young age, he had an idea in his mind of the kind of man he wanted to be. “It incorporated everything, not just wealth,” says James, “but who I was going to be in society, in business and at home – what kind of husband, father and son I wanted to be.”
James gave this ideal man a name, Benedict Raven. “He represents a character that we all have inside of us; the kind of man we all aspire to become. A successful, true gentleman with character and a strong moral compass, who can achieve anything he sets his mind to.” Starting out in recruitment, James built up his own company that within five years had become a multi-million-pound business working with major blue-chip clients.
In the recruitment industry, the first lesson for success is making the right impression. “It’s so important to look good and feel good,” says James. “I believe in dressing for success – it’s how you portray the best image of yourself.” But James himself struggled to find a wardrobe that really captured the confidence, sophistication and style he wanted to convey. “Suits and ties are becoming a thing of the past and I couldn’t find the complete outfit I wanted without spending hours shopping around different brands,” he says. So James decided to create his own clothing line that would offer timeless, luxury classics for the modern successful gentleman – for the Benedict Ravens of this world.
After putting together a design team and sourcing quality fabrics and craftspeople from around the world, the result is Benedict Raven’s Timeless collection: a range of lightweight merino wool knitwear, jeans, blazers and shirts, cut for comfort as well as style, all in a complementary palette of muted blues, greys and whites.
The brand launched in October last year and is continuing to expand its collection. A dinner jacket and polo shirts will soon be added, as well as a range of pocket squares that complete the style. Whether it’s a weekend on a yacht or a night on the red carpet, the aim is to make Benedict Raven the trusted byword for luxury, elegance and quality in menswear.
